“The first draf…

“The first draft of anything is shit.”
― Ernest Hemingway

This is the reason I’m here. The first draft of anything is indeed shit. The second draft is less shitty. Hopefully, the third is only full of shit, the way my Shakespeare professor once told me that I was (although he put it a different way, saying that I was “touched by the Blarney Stone”).

Got My Glasses On Proofreading Service

You did it! You completed your manuscript. Your hard work is ready to be sent out into the world—be it to your agent, to your editor, as a contest submission, or to the e-publisher’s website. You glance at the title one last time before hitting the send button and you gasp in horror, yanking your finger away from the keyboard. There, on the front page, just above your name, you notice a glaring mistake—Too Be or Not To Be: An Anthology of Shakespearian Wit and Wisdom. In effect, you’ve named your book Also Be or Not To Be, as well as misquoting Shakespeare. If such an obvious error graces the title, what else did you overlook in the next 200 or so pages?

It’s easy to miss little mistakes because our minds fill them in, especially we the authors, who know what we mean, even if it’s not what we wrote. Someone else can often spot the errors and keep us from making blunders that could land us in the slush pile.

I will look for:

  • Misspellings
  • Word repetition
  • Missing words
  • Word choice (walk vs stroll or stride or amble)
  • Awkward phrasing
  • Grammar gaffs (run-on sentences, sentence fragments, etc)
  • Justification
  • Widows/Orphans
  • Major inconsistencies (eye color, name of dog, etc)

I accept .DOC, DOCX, and .RTF formats. Documents must be formatted in the romance industry standard: 1″ margins, double spaced, Times New Roman 12 or 14 or Courier New 12. This is the format in which they will be calculated for billing purposes.

What I will read:

  • Romances from fluff to erotic (including some aliens and sentient bestiality—centaurs and such)
  • Sci-fi (general)
  • Fantasy (alternate universe)
  • Historical (pre-20th century)
  • Western
  • Horror (so long as no children are harmed in the production)

What I won’t read:

  • Child porn
  • Bestiality with Rover, the pet dog
  • Tentacle porn
  • Non-consensual/golden shower/etc
  • Sci-fi ala William Gibson
  • Teen/YA
  • Children’s books
  • Non-fiction

I will sometimes read spiritual/Christian-based, but they are a rare bird on my bookshelf.

Credentials:

  • Bachelor of Arts in English from Southern Connecticut State University.
  • Course completion, Denver Institute of Publishing.
  • Two years RWA, including judging my local chapter’s contest.
  • Critique partner/beta reader for Jen Fitzgerald (proofreader for The Wild Rose Press).
  • Beta for multiple authors from various websites (both fan fiction and original fiction).
  • Twenty-five years of mentally correcting spelling and grammar in printed books and on road-side signs as I read them.
  • I read grammar books for fun. Don’t laugh. Well, at least don’t point.
